Rail Ghent Terneuzen

North Sea Port is working with ProRail and Infrabel on cross-border rail development in and around the port area. To this end, the Rail Ghent Terneuzen project organisation has been set up, which will spend the next few years exploring and developing rail and related plans in the port area between Terneuzen and Ghent.

The Rail Ghent Terneuzen project organisation is committed to future-proof and modern infrastructure. That means a stronger, cross-border rail network providing a sustainable alternative to road transport. An improved rail connection will also give an economic boost to the development of the Ghent-Terneuzen region, thanks in part to a stronger business climate.

Additional rail is also needed to facilitate the continued growth of freight transport by rail, ensuring sustainable economic growth in and around North Sea Port.

Resolving bottlenecks

Preliminary studies in 2018 showed that there are bottlenecks in several places that could inhibit growth. North Sea Port, ProRail and Infrabel are therefore exploring, along with local stakeholders, how these bottlenecks can be resolved. Bottlenecks are, among others, expected at the following locations:

  • Opening up the track bundle at Zandeken
  • The railway between Zelzate and Sluiskil (West bank)
  • The track around Sluiskil Bridge
