Rail Ghent Terneuzen

North Sea Port is working with ProRail and Infrabel on cross-border rail development in and around the port area. To this end, the Rail Ghent Terneuzen project organisation has been set up, which will spend the next few years exploring and developing rail and related plans in the port area between Terneuzen and Ghent.

The Rail Ghent Terneuzen project organisation is committed to future-proof and modern infrastructure. That means a stronger, cross-border rail network providing a sustainable alternative to road transport. An improved rail connection will also give an economic boost to the development of the Ghent-Terneuzen region, thanks in part to a stronger business climate.

Additional rail is also needed to facilitate the continued growth of freight transport by rail, ensuring sustainable economic growth in and around North Sea Port.

Three possible developments

North Sea Port, ProRail and Infrabel, along with local stakeholders, are considering three possible rail developments:

  • a new connection on the east bank between Axel in the Netherlands and Zelzate in Belgium;
  • a new south-east curve in the railway east of the Sluiskil bridge;
  • access to the north of the railway bundle at Kluizendok ('Zandeken').

These potential rail developments emerged from extensive preliminary research funded by the European Union.

Explore and elaborate

Over the next few years, the focus of the Rail Ghent Terneuzen project organisation will be on exploring and elaborating the plans. This further study will involve local stakeholders by engaging with residents and organisations.
