In short, following the conversion:
- there will be virtually no intersections with lights left, although there will be bridges, tunnels and underpasses (short tunnels)
- there will be safe bicycle lanes and highways along and over/under the R4
- some side-roads with a local function will be cut off from the R4
Smooth and safe connection to E17 and E40
Through this conversion, the Flemish government is investing in a smoother and safer flow of traffic on the R4. The R4 is intended to guarantee a quick connection between the E34/Netherlands and the E40/E17 in Ghent, while the R4 East is meant to ensure smooth access to the companies in the port.
The motorways aren't the only aspect the project will address. Investments will also be made in 25 km of bicycle infrastructure, 8 new bicycle bridges, 15 new bicycle underpasses, rail infrastructure, greenery and noise barriers. The Flemish government, for example, has earmarked over 150 million euros for investments in a network of safe bicycle connections to the port in Ghent.
Initially, a number of partial projects will be carried out according to an accelerated schedule. These four so-called quick wins include the construction of three bicycle bridges on the R4 West and the revamping of the junction at ‘Eurosilo’ (R4 East) into a ‘turbo roundabout’. This junction is where the R4 East connects to the intersection of the E17 and E40. This work is being planned for 2020. The other work is scheduled to follow from 2022.
