Mega battery park by Lion Storage strengthens North Sea Port’s role as an energy hub

Published on Mon 24 Feb 2025
One of Europe’s largest battery parks is coming to Vlissingen. Under the name Mufasa, Lion Storage will build a facility for storing renewable electricity. This project reinforces North Sea Port’s position as a key hub for the production and distribution of sustainable energy.

The new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is set to become operational in the first half of 2027. The batteries will have the capacity to charge and discharge 1,400 MWh with a power capacity of 350 MW, multiple times per day. This is enough to supply power to over 200,000 households. The project will be the largest BESS installation in the Netherlands and one of the biggest electricity storage projects in Europe. Battery parks like this are essential for balancing supply and demand in renewable energy.

Renewable electricity

With Mufasa, North Sea Port is adding another pillar to its energy strategy. As a cross-border port, we already play a key role in the production and distribution of electricity in the Netherlands and Belgium, with an increasing share coming from renewable sources. This aligns with the port’s commitment to climate neutrality and sustainability.
The region of Vlissingen, Terneuzen, and Ghent is home to over 100 wind turbines, some of the largest solar parks in the Low Countries, and several power plants. North Sea Port is also the biggest hydrogen hub in the Benelux. Several renewable energy projects are either in development or already underway in the port area. Additionally, Vlissingen serves as a base for the construction, operation, and maintenance of offshore wind farms.

€350 million investment
Lion Storage has successfully completed the financial arrangements for the Mufasa project. Along with its own investment, the company is backed by Macquarie Capital, TINC, and six banks. The total investment exceeds €350 million.
On the technological front, Mufasa will use 372 battery packs from American company Tesla. The daily operation of the battery park will be managed by Eneco.

About Lion Storage

Lion Storage is a pioneer in energy storage system development. The Dutch company is part of Return, a group that has 7 GW of green electricity storage projects in the pipeline across the European Union. Nearly half of these projects are expected to be operational by 2030.
