Seaports and cargo streams may be potential targets for terrorist attacks. The ISPS Code is a set of international measures which describes the obligation to secure ships and port facilities.
All terminals which berth sea-going vessels larger than 500 Gross Tons from international destinations are obliged to follow the ISPS Code. The ISPS Code was drafted by the International Maritime Organization, the IMO.
The European Union has incorporated IMO's international legislation in a separate EU Security Regulation. References to the ISPS code are also to be taken to mean the EU Security Regulation. Virtually all the terminals within Zeeland Seaports' management area have been awarded certificates of approval for the security measures at their terminals.
