The increasing volumes of international traffic mean that infectious diseases can spread more quickly and easily. That is why more attention is paid globally to infectious diseases. In direct response to the SARS epidemic in 2003 the WHO revised the International Health Regulations.
By signing the IHR in 2005 the member states of the WHO confirmed that they would commit themselves to these international agreements on combating infectious diseases. In the Netherlands the IHR has been part of the Public Health Act since 1 December 2008.
